South Down MLA Patrick Brown and Cllr Joy Ferguson (Banbridge DEA) have penned a letter to the ABC Council’s Chief Executive, urging for Rathfriland’s fair share of heritage funding. Last year, the Heritage Lottery announced that ABC Borough Council will benefit from a share of £200 million to unlock the rich heritage of the borough.
The Alliance representatives have been working alongside Rathfriland Regeneration, Rathfriland Historical Society and Drumballyroney C.I.C who have developed a Heritage plan tailored for the town. The plan outlines the key existing attractions such as the existing heritage trail, Drumballroney Church and the Bronte Centre, as well as noting the areas and people of historical interest in Rathfriland.
Patrick said, ‘Rathfriland boasts a past with immense potential for visitors to explore its rich history. The locally developed Heritage Plan underscores the breadth of opportunities the town offers. It's imperative that we seize this potential, and we've outlined this in our communication with the Chief Executive.’
Cllr Ferguson added, ‘ The Heritage Places Scheme is at a very early stage but we felt it was important to outline the potential in Rathfriland. Council have confirmed that following a Letter of Offer from the Heritage Lottery which is expected around June, the council will launch significant consultation across the borough to ascertain how this funding will be distributed. I am pleased to say that following Alliance’s letter, the council have committed to engaging Rathfriland in this consultation.’
‘Patrick and I are committed to the regeneration of Rathfriland and I will be working alongside local groups to ensure Rathfriland is included in the heritage lottery funding.’
