A Newry man has called upon Newry Mourne and Down District Council to provide much needed public toilets to the west of Newry which he has claimed has been been deprived of such amenities for many years.
Community activist John McCabe said "The former Newry and Mourne District Council back in 2015 launched an anti-dog fouling public information film which showed a man out walking his dog as he went on to simulate defecating outside Newry Town Hall.
"This film is so ironic today when you consider it was to show the ridiculous situation of a human going to the toilet in the street yet our council does not provide adequate public toilets west of Newry Canal to discourage a human from doing the very thing a dog would do.
"Newry prides itself on its city status and yet its only purpose built toilets were at Railway Avenue to the west which remained closed for many years eventually to be destroyed by fire and the other at Newry Market.
"Other toilets the public opt to use freely include the ones at Newry library and at Translink Bus Station all east of Newry Canal with the busy west end of our city left for many years with no accessible council purpose built public toilets."
John has cited Banbridge and Armagh as places of having excellent central purpose built non communal public toilets adding that Banbridge during a major refurbishing of Solitiude Park back in 2009 their council provided a row of six new toilets.
