A Newry.ie reader has said they were disgusted and heartbroken following a racist incident in Newry at the weekend.
The reader who didn't want to be named was out for a meal with their partner in the city and on their way back to their car they were verbally abused.
The reader said "My partner, who is of Asian background, was verbally attacked in broad daylight—for nothing more than the colour of their skin."
Explaining the incident the reader said "Yesterday in Newry, my partner and I had just finished a lovely meal and were simply crossing the road back to our car. I crossed first, and as my partner was coming behind me, a black jeep with two men pulled up.
"One of them leaned out the window and shouted 'Get off the road, you black f**** "
The couple were extremely annoyed. "We were disgusted, ashamed, and traumatised that this kind of blatant racism is still happening in 2025. To witness such vile hate shouted without shame, in public, is absolutely unacceptable."
The reader added "We’re shocked that this could happen in a place we call home. It should never happen anywhere. No one should feel afraid or lesser because of who they are or what they look like."
"Racism should never be ignored, dismissed, or normalised. Call it out. Speak up. Demand better."
