Camlough born MP Conor McGinn has announced that he won't be standing in the next General Election.
In a statement the Labour MP for St Helens North in England explained that he has had several health issues in the past year including a heart condition. Mr McGinn said "I think it is therefore the right time for me and the right thing to do for my young family to step away from Westminster and start a new chapter in pur lives, and therefore I do not intend to stand at the next General Election"
The MP explained that he is going to take some time off to fully recover from his health issues and then will "continue to work hard for our fantastic community in St Helen's and Newton-le-Willows until the next election."
Speaking of his time as an MP Mr McGinn said "Like everyone I made mistakes and sometimes got it wrong, but I am very proud of what I have achieved and the good things I have done as an MP over my three terms." One of his major achievements was the introduction of same-sex marriage legislation in NI in 2019 via an amendment in the House of Commons.
Mr McGinn is the son of former Newry, Mourne and Down District Council Councillor Pat McGinn.
