A new book charting more than 160 years of history in the Newry area will be launched in Camlough this week. Cath Saoirse an Iúir – Newry's Struggle, written by local historian Raymond Watson, explores the political, social and cultural history of Newry and the surrounding districts from 1798 to 1962.
The launch will take place at Café Mon Abri, Camlough, on Thursday, 25 June at 7.30pm, with admission free and open to members of the public. Watson will be signing copies of the book, which will be on sale at £20 each.
The title translates as Newry's Struggle for Freedom and reflects the book's focus on the people and events that shaped the area between the United Irishmen Rebellion of 1798 and the changing political landscape of the mid-twentieth century. The publication focuses on the experiences of communities in Newry, South Down, Armagh and North Louth during a period marked by political upheaval, resistance and profound social change, tracing key events in Irish history through a local lens and documenting the impact of British rule while highlighting the role played by ordinary men and women in shaping the region's story.
Watson, well known for his interest in local history, creative art and heritage, has spent years researching the historical experiences of people in the Newry district. Drawing on extensive historical research, he examines generations of struggle, resilience and community activism that helped define the character of the area. His latest work seeks to preserve stories that might otherwise be forgotten and to provide readers with a deeper understanding of the forces that influenced life in the border region over nearly two centuries.
Speaking ahead of the launch, Gerry Savage, who will host the event, described the publication as an important contribution to the historical record of the region, bringing local experiences within the wider narrative of Ireland's struggle for political and national self-determination.
Attendees will have the opportunity to meet the author, hear about the research behind the book and discuss the historical themes explored within its pages.
