Canal Work to start next week!

The Newry City Linkages Public Realm Scheme that will see the complete look of the Newry Canal changed for good is due to start on Monday or Tuesday of next week.

The existing unsightly wall will be removed, the footpath widened with new street furniture and railings at the waters edge and new trees will be planted all along the road side of the path.

The scheme will start from the Sugar Island end of the Canal with sections cordoned of and will then move in steps towards the Albert Basin with the work expected to be completed by June 2014.

A steady flow of interested parties attended tonights public meeting in Newry Town Hall where the contractor and consultants outlined the project and answered questions from members of the public, Representatives from the Newry Maritime Association, IWAI Newry and Portadown Branch, Local Council officials and Newry Business People.

One issue that still remains an issue for several local business people is the loss of Car Parking Spaces along Merchants Quay and Buttercrane Quay and the need for provision of Free Parking Spaces elsewhere in the city to replace them!
