Caring Coins Association based at Sticky Fingers headquarters in Edward Street, Newry have launched an appeal to help local families feed their children during non term time following the removal of the School Holiday Food Grant in 2023.
Kerrie Havern founder member of Caring Coins said "A major concern being raised by members in the community is the removal of 'holiday hunger' payments for children entitled to free school meals. The holiday food grant was to support low-income families with the cost of feeding children during non-term time. The impact of this in Northern Ireland will massively affect over 96,000 children.
"The Caring Coins Committee met this week and feel that this is more than just a concern for our service users and feel we need to do something to support those that are going to be in need. We have proposed to launch a scheme 'The Big Summer Breakfast Club' "
It is planned that the club will run from 25 June to 31 August, Tuesday to Saturday 10am to 2pm. It will be fully open to anyone from the public who needs a breakfast and if others would like to join for company and make a donation that would also be very welcomed.
The plan is to serve tea, toast and cereals for the 10 weeks (including porridge/Weetabix) to ensure no-one will leave hungry and as Kerrie adds "hopefully all with a smile on their faces."
The Caring Coin Community Café based at Sticky Fingers will allow them to provide for up to 60 people daily at the club.
Kerrie explains how it will work "For this to all be a success it will require support from local businesses, and I am asking if you can join me in this launch and make a donation. We estimate we will need to raise a minimum of £10.000. If you cannot make a financial donation but can support by supplying milk, bread, tea or eggs this would also be very appreciated."
