Getting specific dates for the completion of the Carlingford Lough Greenway stretch from Victoria Lock to the Border is not an easy task, and while the previous information council shared with us (Feb 25) was "early summer" this has now moved to just "summer" so we can only assume that it may possibly been delayed a little bit, but hopefully not by much!
Completion of this particular section of the popular leisure facility for walkers and cyclists cannot come soon enough and once open the route will be a major tourist destination benefiting Newry, Carlingford and Omeath.
This final link in the greenway has been plagued by delays, with planning permission applied for in 2019 for a linkage path that would have crossed the road and travelled through Fathom Forest from the lock to the border. When Department for Infrastructure refused to allow the route to cross the busy road, the plan was changed to a 1.2km boardwalk and planning permission was granted for this in November 2023.
In their reply to a media query from Newry.ie a council spokesperson said "The final section of the Greenway project – including a 1.2km boardwalk and 0.5km greenway linking Victoria Lock to the Border – is expected to open to the public following the contractor’s demobilisation in summer 2025.
"We thank the public for their continued support and patience as we work to complete this important active travel and tourism asset for the district.”
Currently the contractor is completing the fencing on the elevated boardwalk stretch and road safety barriers have been put in place along the route.
