A request has been made to the Department for Infrastructure (DfI) to review and upgrade where necessary traffic calming measures in Markethill village.
Armagh, Banbridge and Craigavon Borough Council Councillor Bróna Haughey made the request. Cllr Haughey said “Local residents have been in contact me to voice their concerns in relation to a number of issues and concerns, including traffic management, car parking and pedestrian safety and accessibility.
"Over recent months, many residents and businesses have become increasingly frustrated by a noticeable rise in illegal and inconsiderate parking, particularly around the town centre and near schools and shops”.
The local Councillor continued “Vehicles are frequently parked on double yellow lines and footpaths, restricting visibility and access for pedestrians, including parents with prams and people with mobility issues.
"In addition, there is a growing issue with speeding through the town, especially on approach roads such as the Main Street, Armagh Road and Mowhan Road. These areas have seen a clear disregard for speed limits, creating serious safety risks for both residents and other road users”.
The Cusher representative stated that she had requested a number of initiatives to help alleviate the problems.
“Enforcement is key to addressing illegal parking and speeding, and I have also asked the DfI to review traffic calming measures in the locality.
"It is important that all agencies recognise the importance of traffic calming and road safety measures and explore solutions that deliver better for communities and improve lives”.
