The annual Camlough Mountain Christmas morning climb will once again be a chance to show solidarity with the Palestinian people and also will raise much needed funds for the people of Gaza.
Slieve Gullion Councillor Declan Murphy has visited Palestine and experienced at first hand the challenges facing those living there. He is extending a welcome to all to attend the climb which leaves the village at 9am on Christmas morning. Cllr Murphy said: “We must not stop talking about Palestine. Israel’s offensive in Gaza has killed nearly 45,000 Palestinians and injured more than 106,000, while more than 10,000 are reported missing and likely buried under the rubble.
"Approximately 80% of Gaza's territory remains under forced displacement orders by Israeli forces, with 1.9 million people, or 90% of the total population, having been internally displaced multiple times during the past year.
"Christmas Day unfortunately for the people of Gaza will not be a day of joy, but is set to be another day of Israeli bombardment, death, injury and fear."
The Slieve Gullion representative added "We will climb Camlough mountain (Sliabh gCuircin) on Christmas morning carrying in our hearts the people of Palestine and in solidarity with them. The ongoing campaign of genocide in Gaza by Israel must stop immediately”
The climb will gather outside Doyles Pub and leave Camlough village on Christmas morning at 9am.
On return to the village, Café Mon Abri in the main street will be opened offering light refreshments. The management & staff of Café Mon Abri in support of the Palestinian people and in an act of solidarity will be providing all refreshments free of charge. Participant's in the mountain climb or having a coffee in Café Mon Abri can make a donation in the donation boxes in Café Mon Abri.
