Newry, Mourne and Down District Council and the Department for Infrastructure say they are aware of recurring lighting issues on Merchants Quay in Newry and that they are working on the issue with remedial action to be taken by the end of this week and a permanent fix as soon as possible.
An ongoing electrical fault on Merchants Quay in Newry over the past few years has thrown the area into darkness on many occasions, causing some businesses in the area to express concern on safety, both in crossing the road and the potential dangers for people walking in the area, especially women.
On Monday of this week, 16 December both street lights and Christmas illuminations were off between Bellinis and Sugar Island. On Tuesday and yesterday street lights were functioning but the Christmas ones weren't.
Additionally the last two nights the entire length of Buttercrane Quay has been in darkness and the Christmas illuminations in front of The Quays were also off.
A Council Spokesperson said "An ongoing electrical fault is being investigated collaboratively between Newry, Mourne and Down District Council and DfI. Remedial actions are to be completed by end of this week. The issue will continue to be reviewed after this work is completed." The Council added that the issue will continue to be monitored throughout the remaining Christmas period.
A Department for Infrastructure spokesperson said: “The Department is aware of the issues with the public and festive lighting at Merchant’s Quay, Newry with an electrical fault occurring which turns off the public streetlights and festive features. Both Council and DfI are working collaboratively to solve the issue, and a permanent fix will be in place as soon as possible.”
