Write a commentWork is continuing on the Carlingford Lough Greenway linkage between Victoria Lock and Omeath.
Clearing of a portion of the former Newry to Greenore railway line at Cornamucklagh and at other stages along the way is ongoing. On the northern end a path has been cleared from former pub Patsy's Parlour to Victoria Lock through the Fathom Forest.
The Greenway from Omeath to Carlingford and from Newry to Victoria Lock has proved very popular in its first few years of operation, but the connection when finished will give the facility an entirely new dynamic, meaning a cycle from Newry to Carlingford and back won't involve you taking your life in your hands cycling on the road.
Newry, Mourne and Down Council are presently involved in investigating a route to link the greenway through Newry City with Newry Canal Towpath. Once complete it would mean that you could travel on foot or by bike all the way from Carlingford to Portadown virtually all off road.
Funders SEUPB have granted a 12 month extension to the project programme. Originally the facility was supposed to be completed by December 2019. No date has yet been set for completion of the project.
