Write a commentMore resources must be put into community policing. That's according to local MLA Justin McNulty. Mr McNulty made the comments following a meeting with Assistant Chief Constable Alan Todd.
The Newry and Armagh representative said, "Policing is a key part of any normal society and my experience is people want to see a visible, responsive and representative policing service. For many years, policing was very contentious in our communities but now the biggest cry out from local communities is to see more police on the ground addressing local issues.
"This includes everything from anti-social behaviour, speeding, dumping, burglaries, to issues with drugs. People really want to see police on the ground in the local communities addressing issues which matter to them and that’s the issue I raised with the Assistant Chief Constable this week."
Mr McNulty concluded "Police don’t always get it right and there are mechanisms to deal with complaints through the Police Ombudsman’s Office. Police do get it right as well and either way I have no issue in calling it as it is. Policing is a fundamental part of any normal society and it is important that we as representatives of the community engage with the police to ensure that they are aware of the priorities of local communities."
