Despite the cold December night a great crowd turned up in Newry Gateway Club for the launch of “Oidhreacht Oirialla” the journal produced by Newry Branch Gaelic League to mark the centenary commemoration of Coláiste Bhríde – Saint Brigid’s Irish College Omeath.
A musical note to the evening was promised and the performance by Pádráigín Ní Uallacháin was indeed a rare treat; Pádraigín gave us her mellifluous rendition of some classic songs from the south-east Ulster-Oriel Gaeltacht including her iconic “Margadh an Iúir” (Newry Market) and “Dúlamán” which engaged the audience with its catchy chorus. Dr. Gearóid Trimble of Foras na Gaeilge, himself an expert of the song tradition of Oriel, launched the journal while the editor, Anita Gallagher, gave a synopsis of the fresh research to be found in the new publication. Fear a’ tí was Séamus Mac Dhaibhéid.
The Mayor of Newry, John McArdle, gave a speech on behalf of the Newry and Mourne District Council, co-funders along with Foras na Gaeilge, the Heritage Lottery and the Elliott-Trainor Partnership. Representatives came from the Omeath Historical Society and the audience included visitors from Donegal, Belfast, Dundalk and Banbridge.
The event brought closure to a special commemorative year and the warmth and cheer far outweighed the cold winter’s evening. Copies of the souvenir journal are available at the Currency Exchange, 12 Hill Street, Newry, priced £5. Further information available from 07714728101.
