A misty morning at unaffected trees closer to Derrymore House. Photograph: Columba O'HareAt a recent meeting involving the National Trust, Newry and Mourne Council and the “Friends of Derrymore” Group,it was revealed by Property manager of the National Trust Edward Mason, that as a result of detecting the fungus Meripilus in some of the boundary trees, the trust in the interest of Health and Safety, must fell some of them.

Speaking on the matter Sinn Féin Councillor Pat Mc Ginn stated “The Trust informed all those present that it would be carrying out root condition surveys on the Derrymore Road Trees and this will enable them to prioritise the removal of unstable trees. The vital work will be carried out in the vicinity of St Peters Primary School and hopefully will involve as little disruption as possible”

The local elected representative also encouraged any local school or community group that would like to learn about and get involved in the range of conservation activities at Derrymore to contact Head Warden Ian Greenaway on 02887789007. The Friends of Derrymore Group can be contacted at 07710145644
