An artists impression of what the Camlough Lake recreational hub could look like.

A proposed recreational hub at Camlough Lake is moving to its next stage of development with Public and  Online Consultations set up by Newry, Mourne and Down District Council to find out the public’s views for the development. The proposal seeks to provide facilities for both water and non-water based activities at Camlough Lake.

The proposal includes a single storey multi-use building, outdoor space with external showers, changing facilities, slipway, kayak storage, picnic areas, vehicular turning and bus and car parking areas. Development proposals include upgrading the of existing vehicular access off the Newtown Road for the provision of entrance and exit lanes and associated visibility splays.  There is also a new pedestrian access linked to the existing lake footway.

A public consultation event will be held in St. Malachy’s Primary School, 3 Chapel Road, Camlough BT35 7HF on Thursday 7 December 2023 from 4pm to 8pm.

Newry, Mourne and Down District Council Chairperson, Councillor Valerie Harte said, “This is a positive step forward to develop new recreational facilities at Camlough Lake, these initial proposals and concepts seek residents’ direct engagement and personal feedback. We are keen that as many local people feel involved in the ongoing development of this project and take the opportunity to attend the in person consultation event or to complete the online version.”

For members of the public who cannot attend the in-person public consultation event on Thursday 7 December a dedicated online consultation has also been set up camloughrecreationalhubproposal.com. The website features the proposed development plans for the Recreational Hub and offers members of the public to provide confidential online feedback. The online consultation will close on Thursday 14 December.

Once all of the feedback has been considered and any necessary changes made, the design team will proceed to submit a planning application to the Council’s Planning Department.

Funding for this project has been provided to Council by the UK Governments Levelling Up fund.
