Newry man Cormac Cranney has a great deal of energy, and an eye for a good figure. This excess energy leads him to run marathons whenever possible, and the figure he has his eye on is 40.
Cormac turns 40 this year and intends to celebrate the event by running in the Berlin Marathon. Coincidentally, the Berlin Marathon also celebrates its 40th anniversary this year.
Cormac's parents, Gerry and Frances Cranney are amongst the longest-serving Volunteers in the local branch, and are themselves stalwart fund-raisers for the cause.
Cormac is not one to waste his time and energy so he will be using his time at the Berlin Marathon to raise money for the Newry/Dundalk branch of Samaritans.
By an amazing coincidence, this year is also the 40th anniversary of Samaritans starting to offer its services in the Newry/Dundalk area.
The idea first came to Cormac on the 24th July last year when, as part of “Keep on Running” (official Guinness World Record Holders of the greatest distance covered by a relay team, 3,504.28 miles)) Samaritans entertained runners, timekeepers and spectators, highlighting the date, 24/7, which reflects the service offered in the area.
The local branch of Samaritans is located at 19 St Coleman's Park, Newry, and there is an Open Night coming up on Thursday 22nd August, at 7.30pm, where anybody interested can find out more about the work they do.
