Newry and Mourne District Council has announced that they have nominated Ryan Cinnamond as one of it's two nominations to carry the Olympic Torch when it arrives in Newry in June 2012.
A council Spokesperson stated "Ryan meets all the necessary criteria as a Torch Bearer in that he has been an inspiration to all young people in the way he has coped with life since his tragic illness. The organising committee were particularly seeking nominations for young people and Mayor Casey had no hesitation in putting Ryans name forward"
Cllr Charlie Casey, Mayor, Newry and Mourne District Council said "The choice of Ryan Cinnamond as a nominee for the role of Torch Bearer will certainly highlight to his peers that even in the face of adversity sport still remains one of his greatest passions and if chosen he will be a great ambassador for the Newry and Mourne Area"
The venue for the announcement was St Colman's College where there is a major capital development to provide sporting facilities, which will be used in partnership with the College pupils and the local community. The council are working in partnership with other funding agencies to bring the project to fruition.
