Newry, Mourne and Down Council have said that staff are presently working cleaning up the Carlingford Lough Greenway and that they plan to have it cleared "for normal access" by the end of this week. Staff have today cleared a section of weeds from the Victoria Lock end of the 6km greenway.
It follows online comments this week complaining about the overgrown state the facility was in, leaving no room for passing or observing social distancing.
Newry city councillor Gavin Malone brought the issue to the council's attention following the comments.
Normally four council staff carry out ground maintenance works along Newry Canal from Gambles Bridge to Victoria Lock including works on the waterway and the land, as well as the servicing of the many bins located along the walkway, but in a statement to Newry.ie a council spokesperson explained that reduction of council staff resources meant that some work hasn't been able to be completed in the usual time frame.
"The Council’s Ground Maintenance section is currently operating at reduced resource levels, partly due to current COVID-19 circumstances. Staff from this section have also had to be deployed to key frontline services such as refuse collection and the opening of Household Recycling Centres. explained the spokesperson adding "Inevitably this has resulted in not all grounds maintenance works being completed in a timely manner. Staff are currently attending to the pathway along the Newry Greenway and expect to have this cleared for normal access by the end of the week.”
