Newry and Mourne District Council had an early start to the Burns Night celebrations when they hosted a reception today in honour of the celebrated poets work.
Robert Burns is the best known of the poets who have written in the Scottish tongue and is known for his world famous song Auld Lang Syne.
John McArdle, Mayor spoke of the poets life and this was followed by Piper Desmond Moorehead leading in the Haggis and Ursula Mhic An tSaoir addressed the Haggis before stabbing it in the usual way.
Speaking at the event Cllr Harold McKee, Vice Chairman of the Council's Ulster Scots Committee said "Newry and Mourne District Council is a pioneer among councils in the promotion of Ulster Scots culture and in supporting the Ulster Scots community in the district. The council was the first Council to have an Ulster Scots committee and provides funding to community groups for the promotion of Ulster Scots heritage and culture in the area.."
"Recently the Council accessed fundiing from DCAL to carry out a cultural audit of Ulster Scots heritage in the area and will be using this research to redraft its Ulster Scots strategy for the district and to include Ulster Scots tourism in its tourism strategy."
"The Council acknowledges that a variety of cultural heritages co-exist within its boundaries and is committed to celebrating such diversity. The Burns Celebration has been a great success for the past few years and raises the awareness of the Ulster Scots community within the Council among elected members, staff and citizens. We hope to build on our celebration of Rabbie Burns year on year and bring the work of the bard to a wider audience."
The event was concluded with a delicious meal of Haggis, tatties and neeps.{igallery id=3452|cid=142|pid=1|type=category|children=0|addlinks=0|tags=|limit=0}
