Tha Samaritans have had a presence in Newry for 50 years and to mark that landmark a Civic Reception was held for the charity. Formed in 1973 in Marcus Square Newry, the services of the Samaritans have been a lifeline for countless individuals in our community who have faced emotional distress, despair and loneliness.

During the reception at Monaghan Row, Newry, Mourne and Down District Council Chairperson, Councillor Valarie Harte expressed her gratitude to the organisation. Cllr Harte said “It is an honour and a privilege to be able to host tonight’s Civic Reception to mark the 50th Anniversary of the outstanding commitment of the Newry Samaritans branch,” said Cllr Harte. “I want to acknowledge and thank all the dedicated volunteers, who have selflessly devoted time and energy to people 24/7 - 365 days a year, to offer compassion, empathy and emotional support to anyone who is struggling to cope or who needs a listening ear.

“Their unwavering commitment to offering confidential, non-judgemental support has provided solace and comfort to those who need it most, saving lives and bringing light in the darkest moments.

“The services which the Samaritans provide are invaluable and impact on the lives of so many in such a positive manner by providing a lifeline for countless individuals in our local community who may be experiencing or have experienced deep emotional distress or suicidal thoughts. It is essential that we continue to support the vital work that you and all third sector organisations provide across our district.”

Newry Samaritans President, Oonagh Brown praised the volunteers that ensured the Samaritans in Newry could keep going. Ms Brown said, “Newry Samaritans have been answering calls for help for the last 50 years, reaching out to people who are in crisis or are having difficulty coping. We hope to continue to ensure that our callers hear the words ‘Samaritans, can we help you?’ and know that they are not alone. The work of the Samaritans can only continue thanks to the dedication of our volunteers. If you think you could help, please consider volunteering with us.”

The Chairperson concluded the evening by presenting the president of Newry Samaritans branch, Oonagh Brown with an engraved crystal bowl.
