Newry, Mourne and Down District Council has agreed to invest in upgrades to leisure and community facilities in Warrenpoint, Cullyhanna and Kilkeel. The investment was endorsed at a meeting of the council's Strategy, Policy and Resources Committee in May.
In Warrenpoint, the existing pavilion at the Milltown community sports facility is to be replaced after being deemed no longer fit for purpose, a situation that has left users without changing, showering and toilet provision. The council is proposing to appoint a contractor to provide a modern, modular changing pavilion similar to the one at Dundrum playing fields, which meets health and safety standards.
At Cullyhanna Community Centre, managed by the Cullyhanna Community Association, a new roof is to be fitted along with a programme of internal works. These include enhanced insulation, damp removal, painting, new vinyl flooring, electrical testing and replacement of suspended ceiling tiles. The work is scheduled to take place over the summer.
In Kilkeel, new equipment is to be purchased for the fitness suite at Kilkeel Leisure Centre, where a major £3.3 million modernisation programme is already under way. The new equipment will be similar to that available at Newry and Downpatrick Leisure Centres.
Council Chairperson Councillor Philip Campbell said the investment reflected the council's commitment to its residents. "Investment in leisure and community facilities is part of our drive to deliver for residents. We want to ensure they have access to modern buildings and the very best facilities which meet their needs. The investment in Warrenpoint, Cullyhanna and Kilkeel is welcome and helps meet our commitment to improve the health and wellbeing of everyone in the district and reduce health inequalities."
Cllr Campbell said the facilities had a wider role to play in community life. "Modern leisure and community facilities help create healthier, stronger and more connected communities and this investment will have a positive impact."
