The incredibly popular Footsteps in the Forest is all over for another year. The Samhain event was held at Slieve Gullion Forest Park from 21 - 27 October and those who were lucky enough to get tickets followed lantern-lit woodland trails, meeting characters and performers inspired by the legends and folklore of Slieve Gullion along the way. The programme also featured sensory-friendly, Irish language, accessible and British Sign Language interpreted sessions.
Sensory-friendly sessions were held each evening, offering a calmer experience for visitors who benefited from reduced sensory stimulation. A dedicated Irish Language Night celebrated the stories and traditions of Samhain through Irish, while the Footsteps in the Forest Accessible Sessions took place on level ground in The Walled Garden.
The Accessible Sessions were designed to remove the challenges of the woodland trail and mountain climb, while keeping the characters, performances, folklore and atmosphere at the heart of the wider event.
Newry, Mourne and Down District Council Chairperson, Councillor Glyn Hanna, said the aim was to give people different ways to take part. “Creating different ways for people to experience Footsteps in the Forest was an important part of this year’s programme.
“The sensory-friendly, Irish language and accessible sessions helped more visitors connect with the stories, heritage and traditions associated with Samhain in a setting suited to their needs.”
The event drew on the traditions of Samhain, when the veil between worlds was believed to be at its thinnest. Visitors to the event encountered mythical characters, theatrical performances and many stories were told.
Cllr Hanna added, “Footsteps in the Forest once again brought the stories and traditions of Samhain vividly to life within the unique surroundings of Slieve Gullion Forest Park.
“It was wonderful to see families, residents and visitors enjoying the atmosphere, performances and storytelling throughout the event. I would like to thank everyone who attended, along with the performers, production teams, staff and partners whose work made this year’s experience possible.”
He also pointed to the wider visitor offer in the area.
“Events such as Footsteps in the Forest also encourage visitors to explore more of Mourne Gullion Strangford. From our forests, mountains and geopark landscapes to our local food, attractions and places to stay, the destination offers many reasons to return throughout autumn and beyond.”
Footsteps in the Forest formed part of a wider programme of Halloween events and seasonal experiences in Mourne Gullion Strangford, showcasing the destination’s landscapes, culture and heritage.
