Newry, Mourne and Down District Council held a ceremony this week to celebrate and recognise Davina's Ark after the local organisation was named winner of the Community Wellbeing Initiative Award at the Pride of Place Awards held in Limerick on 7 November.
Newry City Councillor Aidan Mathers, who nominated the group, praised their vital work supporting people living with addiction and their families.
Davina's Ark was founded in memory of Davina, a young woman whose own struggle with addiction inspired a service designed to bring hope, healing and purpose to others facing similar challenges. The organisation provides people with a safe place to seek support, restore confidence and rebuild their lives.
Speaking following his attendance at the council's ceremony, Cllr Mathers said: "I am absolutely delighted for Davina's Ark. This recognition is truly deserved. The team provides a vital service, offering support not only to people living with addiction but also to their families and that work changes lives every single day. On behalf of the Newry DEA, I was proud to nominate Davina's Ark and to champion the outstanding contribution they make across our communities. Their success is a testament to the dedication and compassion of everyone involved."
Cllr Mathers added: "The strength of Davina's story, and the determination of those who built this service in her name, continues to inspire. They provide people with a safe place to seek support, restore confidence and rebuild their lives. That is real community empowerment."
He also paid tribute to Newry, Mourne and Down District Council for hosting the celebratory event, saying: "Maith sibh to NMDCC for hosting this event. It is even more special as I nominated Davina's Ark for this award, to see them receive the recognition they truly deserve is awe-inspiring. Our communities are strongest when we work together to support initiatives like this."
Cllr Mathers concluded: "Well done again to all at Davina's Ark, your commitment, your compassion and your courage continue to make a real difference."
