Council's Recipe for Waste Reduction

With Pancake Tuesday tomorrow Newry and Mourne Council are reminding us to reduce our leftovers and recycle as much waste as possible.

Pancakes are traditionally made on Shrove Tuesday to use up any remaining butter, milk and eggs the day before Lent begins. It’s also a great opportunity to use up any leftovers from your fridge or kitchen cupboards, waste less and save more!

Love Food Hate Waste has the perfect recipe for creating something delicious from leftover yoghurt and overripe bananas which might otherwise go to waste. If you have any spare sultanas, flaked almonds or soft berries at home these all make tasty additions to the batter too.

Research shows that over 1 million unopened yoghurts are thrown away every day in the UK, and fresh fruit and vegetables tops the list of the most wasted food type. Each year in the UK we buy and then waste £12bn on food and drink which could have been eaten. That's an average of £50 per month for a family. So instead of sending your leftovers to the bin, why not visit the love food hate waste website www.lovefoodhatewaste.com  for a simple recipe for a Shrove Tuesday treat.

Once you've finished making your perfect pancake, your glass jars from jams/ chocolate spreads, egg boxes and yoghurt/ butter tubs can also be put to good use by recycling them in your blue bin. Don't forget that all the fruit peelings from toppings and egg shells from batter making can be easily recycled in the brown bin if you have one.

Newry and Mourne District Council is regularly encouraging local people to do their bit when it comes to helping reduce waste. Although it may sound trivial, if everybody today does their bit of Pancake Day recycling, we'll really make a difference.
