It was very much business as usual for the Green Spaces Community Growing Project at Moygannon in Warrenpoint despite them celebrating their 'Helping Your Community Grow' win. Weeds had to be removed, bark had to be put on paths and seedlings had to be transplanted.

Dobbies’ Lisburn store announced Green Spaces its local Helping Your Community Grow winner and for their prize the project will receive gardening products, advice, and support to enhance their outside space.

Green Spaces Growing Project creates a welcoming space, where people of all ages, abilities and backgrounds can come together to participate in creative nature-based health and wellbeing activities. The Green Spaces Growing Project consists of an amazing group of volunteers for whom the community garden makeovers is their haven from the everyday stresses of life, an oasis of calm and peace in nature. The group plan to create another community garden makeover with a pond area, sensory plant trail and a seating space for visitors to relax and enjoy.

Dobbies will provide the group with tools and products to help them create this new space, alongside support from its horticultural experts.

Dobbies’ own-brand peat-free multipurpose compost, recycled and recyclable containers, UK-sourced plants and safer pest control products are among the many products the garden centre will donate to its winner.

Ken Ferguson, General Manager at Dobbies’ Lisburn store said: “We are delighted to be supporting Green Spaces Community Growing Project this year and look forward to seeing the community gardening project come to life with our support.

“We’ve been truly overwhelmed with the response to our campaign in Lisburn! The team and I would like to thank all the worthy causes that got involved in the application process and our customers who helped us crown our Helping Your Community Grow winner by voting.”

Roisin Murray Gibbons, Chairperson from Green Spaces Growing Project said: “We are thrilled to have been crowned the local Helping Your Community Grow winner for Lisburn and would like to thank those members of the public who voted for us.

“We’re eager to start the work on our new community garden makeover, and with Dobbies’ support, we can’t wait to get everyone involved in this transformation.”

In addition to the local win, Nest Nurseries Garden Project located in Keston has been crowned the national winner for the initiative and will receive additional funding and support to help their garden project thrive. This will include advice, gardening products and plants to help young children explore the outdoors, learn about nature, improve their physical development and better understand the world around them.
