‘Biking for Bobby’, a recent spin-a-thon fundraiser held at Haldane Fisher, Newry, has raised over £2134 in support of Bobby Browne, a local eight-year-old boy battling leukaemia.
Bobby is in urgent need of a bone marrow transplant, with the event encouraging members of the community and staff to register and find out if they are match for donation.
Danny Browne, Bobby’s father, commented “At this moment in time, we don’t have a match for Bobby, so we are desperate for people to sign up.
“People have understandable concerns about the procedure that follows if you are a match, but one or two days of discomfort is incomparable to saving someone’s life.
“Our campaign will not only help Bobby but also has the potential to help so many people in need of a donor.
“We really appreciate the support from Haldane Fisher and hope that the ‘Biking for Bobby’ event went a long way in raising awareness of the need for more donors in our community.”
The event, which lasted 12 hours, saw more than 60 members of staff at Haldane Fisher taking turns pedalling throughout day, in addition a barbeque was supplied by FiveWays Newry, Sunrays Bakery, and Parkview Provisions.
Chief Executive of Haldane Group, David Haldane, who took part in the spin-a-thon, said “Bobby is an inspiring young boy who has already undergone intense chemotherapy and is now on the waiting list for a transplant.
“As a business with the community at the heart of its operations, we wanted to play our part in the fight against blood cancer while providing Bobby’s family with support in finding a donor.
“A big thank you must go to all our employees and customers who signed up to participate and to those that were cheering on from the side lines.”
