Write a commentYoung people from the Kingsmills Presbyterian Church have participated over the last two months in a successful Cultural Awareness programme.
This programme was developed and delivered by the Good Relations Section at Newry and Mourne District Council and the PEACE III Southern Partnership, supported by the European Union’s European Regional Development Fund through the EU Programme for Peace and Reconciliation (PEACE III) managed by the Special EU Programmes Body.
This integrated programme of activity included informative and interactive workshops which focused on a range of themes, including anti-racism, Polish culture and multi-cultural music and dance. Young people enjoyed taking part in a game of basketball, playing the bagpipes and drums, singing Eastern European songs, learning about the multiple identities and cultures that exist in Newry and Mourne today and how they can take a lead in challenging local myths and stereotypes. This programme provided young people with an excellent platform to recognise and celebrate cultural diversity across the local area.
At the end of the programme, participants also enjoyed a team building day at Todd’s Leap Outdoor Activity Centre where they took part in body zorbing, blind folded land rover driving and the giant swing.
The Mayor of Newry and Mourne, Councillor Daire Hughes said ‘We are delighted to have worked with the young people in Kingsmills, celebrating the cultural diversity that exists in Newry and Mourne today, and I hope we can continue to work with them through the Council’s Good Relations programme in the future’.
