Two members of staff from Daisy Hill Hospital's Maternity Assessment Unit have retired after a combined total of more than 85 years helping to bring new life into the world.
Patricia O'Gorman began working as a Maternity Support Worker in October 1981 and said she loved every minute of her 43-year career. "One of my most special memories was being part of the births of my two grandchildren, that was something I'll never forget," she said. "When people told me I made a difference to their experience, it really made it all worthwhile. Every day at work felt like my first day, seeing the joy on people's faces when their babies arrived was just as special each time."
Patricia said it was her colleagues who made her job even more rewarding. "I couldn't have asked for a better team. I've enjoyed and loved every minute of my career and feel so lucky to have worked with such wonderful people. I'll definitely miss my work, but I'm really looking forward to spending more time with my family and doing all the things I haven't had time for."
Midwife Philomena (Phil) Fletcher joined Daisy Hill in 1983 after working in Jubilee Maternity, describing the move as "a big change" but one she's never regretted. "What I loved most was how everyone across the hospital knew each other personally, and of course, being able to live at home," Phil said. "I stayed in my role because I genuinely loved caring for mums and their families through the highs and lows of pregnancy and birth. I also really enjoyed supporting students in their training, we must remember that they are the future of midwifery."
Phil said it was always important to her that families knew she genuinely cared about them. "I really loved my job and it's been a privilege to be part of so many family journeys at such an important time in their lives." Now that she's "hung up the badge," Phil says she's looking forward to knitting, learning to crochet, reading for pleasure, and "taking the batteries out of the alarm clock."
Michelle Harrison, Assistant Director of Maternity and Integrated Women's Health, paid tribute to both staff members. "Phil and Patricia's dedication perfectly reflects our Vision and Strategy 2030, which focusses on providing safe, high-quality care. Their kindness, professionalism and commitment have touched countless families, and we are deeply grateful for the difference they have made over so many years at Daisy Hill Hospital. They truly represent the best of what makes the Southern Trust a great place to work."
