A Public Rally is taking place in Newry this weekend in support of retaining emergency surgery services at Daisy Hill Hospital.
The rally will start at 12 noon at Marcus Square in the city and from there participants will walk to the hospital where it is planned to put a ring of people around the hospital building.
It follows a proposal by the Southern Trust to move emergency general surgery permanantly from Daisy Hill to Craigavon Hospital.
A spokesperson for the campaign said "Emergency Surgery is just the latest in a long line of Specialist Acute services which have been removed, either temporarily or permanently from Daisy Hill Acute Hospital to be provided only in Craigavon. The Newry & Mourne Locality are paying for services and not getting value for money.
"Newry, Mourne and Down has the 3rd highest Local Government District population in all NI and its only Acute Area hospital at Daisy Hill, Newry must be prioritised for funding and investment as a Major Specialist acute Hospital not just as a Regional elective centre. The population here have no other timely access to any other acute hospital in a surgical emergency."
