Demolition of Newry Swimming Pool and Jennings Park Pavilion

Newry, Mourne and Down District Council has recently awarded a contract to the firm B Small Contracts Ltd for the demolition of the former Newry Swimming Pool at Clanrye Avenue, Newry.

The demolition of Jennings Park Changing Pavilion will also be carried out as part of the contract with work due to commence during August 2016 and will take approximately three months to complete.

The materials arising from the demolition works will be removed from the site via Clanrye Avenue for onward transport to recycling and disposal facilities. When the site has been cleared it will be developed as an additional car park to serve the adjacent new Newry Leisure Centre.

Newry, Mourne and Down District Council Chairperson, Councillor Gillian Fitzpatrick said, “Many residents will be sad to see the old Swimming Pool demolished, as it had enabled the local people the district, as well as thousands of visitors, to enjoy swimming over the many years since it’s opening in 1969."

The Demolition Contract will be closely supervised and managed in order to ensure that all necessary precautions are taken to avoid nuisance or inconvenience to residents living in the vicinity of the site. Safe access will be maintained along the existing access road for the public using Newry Leisure Centre and Jennings Park playing fields, as well as for the Emergency Services.

Councillor Fitzpatrick continued, “Newry, Mourne and Down District Council is delighted to announce that the Phase 2 development of the Leisure Centre is well underway. The main facilities in the second phase will include an eight court sports hall, a four court sports hall, state of the art gym, class and spinning studios, multipurpose rooms, squash and handball facilities, cafe, soft play and a birthday room. The new centre will be an important part of our district for the years to come.”

Phase 2 will cost approximately £10M and this will complement the impressive Phase One Swimming Pool which was opened in April 2015 at a cost of £9M. The Leisure Centre Phase 2 is expected to be complete and operational by mid-2017.
