A Newry councillor has expressed his disappointment after equipment at the newly opened Derrybeg Play Park was damaged just weeks after the facility opened to the public. It's believed that damage was done to a newly installed climbing frame.
Councillor Aidan Mathers said the damage to the £200,000 facility was "entirely unacceptable" and called on the community to take pride in the new amenity.
"This park was built to give children and families in Derrybeg a safe, modern, and inclusive place to play and spend time together," Councillor Mathers said.
"It's deeply frustrating to see that a small number of individuals have shown such disregard for what was achieved through collective effort and public investment."
The councillor, who secured the funding as part of the wider play board strategy, appealed directly to residents to treat the facility with respect.
"The play park belongs to all of us and by looking after it, we can ensure it remains a safe and welcoming space for generations of local children to enjoy," he added.
Cllr Mathers confirmed he will continue to work with council officers to ensure repairs are carried out and that measures are explored to prevent further incidents.
