Construction has started on a new pedestrian island on Rathfriland Road in a move aimed at improving safety for residents and pedestrians in the area.
Newry City Councillor Valerie Harte said she was pleased to see the project getting underway: "I'm pleased to see this important project now underway. I have worked closely with the Department for Infrastructure to ensure the need for improved pedestrian safety on Rathfriland Road was recognised and prioritised," she said.
Cllr Harte described the works as "a welcome step forward" that will greatly enhance safety for both residents and pedestrians. She also praised Infrastructure Minister Liz Kimmins for her commitment to balanced regional development and improving road safety across communities.
Harte confirmed that a meeting with Minister Kimmins was scheduled for this week at Crieve Road to discuss further measures for the area.
