The Department for Infrastructure has signed off on the Planning Permission application for the proposed Newry City Park in what's expected to be the last barrier in the way of the long awaited project. The DfI was involved due to the necessity of rezoning the park from housing to a public park.
A campaign for a 15 Acre park at the Albert Basin was started in 2014 by campaign group Newry 2020 and the park was agreed unanimously by council in November 2017. It was hoped that it would be long completed by now but it now seems like spring 2027 will now be the most likely starting time.

In their reply to Council dated 4 November, two months after Council voted to approve Planning Permission for the park the DfI Chief Planner and Director Rosemary Daly said: "I refer to the notification received from your council, on 10 September 2026, in relation to the above planning application, and the subsequent 'holding' Direction issued by the Department to your council on 18 September 2026, under Article 17 of the Planning (General Development) Order (Northern Ireland) 2015.
"The Department has decided that planning application LA07/2025/0365/F does not warrant referral to it for determination, under Section 29 of the Planning Act (Northern Ireland) 2011, and Newry, Mourne and Down District Council can therefore continue to process the application."
Newry.ie have asked council for an updated timeline so will publish when we get this.
