Following a complaint that work carried out on the banks of Newry Ship Canal by the Department for Infrastructure amounted to "vandalism" the department have said they are going to revisit the site to see what further works are required.
Newry man Oliver McGauley, a champion or Newry Canal recently condemned the work carried out over the winter which saw over 100 open pipes dug into the Omeath road canal bank, a heritage monument. We asked the DfI several questions including if the department had applied for scheduled monument consent, but they didn't answer this question instead giving a short reply stating that the work had been carried out by DfI during exceptionally wet weather.
The statement said “DfI undertook this work during a period of exceptionally wet weather when we were dealing with many issues across the network. The Department will now revisit the site and determine what further works are required.”
