Translink is to introduce new safety arrangements for powered transporters and e-bicycles from 1 June 2026, banning e-scooters from its vehicles and premises in response to growing concerns around lithium-ion battery fire risks. The changes form part of the operator's wider effort to maintain a safe and reliable experience across the public transport network.

From 1 June, powered transporters such as e-scooters will no longer be permitted on Translink vehicles or premises. E-bicycles will continue to be accepted on trains but will not be allowed on buses or coaches, including in luggage compartments, due to fire safety considerations in enclosed spaces.

Mobility scooters and powered wheelchairs are not affected by the new arrangements and will remain welcome in line with Translink's Accessibility Policy, ensuring continued access for customers who rely on these essential mobility aids.

Translink's John Thompson said the changes were grounded in research into emerging risks. "We've taken time to research the emerging fire risks linked to lithium-ion batteries and to understand how we can best respond. Our focus is on providing clear, practical guidance so we can continue delivering safe, reliable journeys for all."

Thompson said customer safety remained the core priority. "Safety is always at the heart of our operations, and we want everyone who uses our services to feel confident, ensuring everyone gets home safe everyday."

Customers are being asked to familiarise themselves with the new guidance ahead of the 1 June deadline. Thompson added: "We really appreciate everyone's support as we make these positive, preventative changes."

Full details of the new arrangements are available at www.translink.co.uk
