In the lead up to next weeks Local Council Elections community campaigning group Newry 2020 have contacted all election candidates in Newry to establish their position on a fixed bridge over Newry Ship Canal as part of the Department for Infrastructures Southern Relief Road. The DfI are proceeding the project with a fixed bridge design which will result in Newry being shut for ships.
The post on the Newry 2020 Facebook page explains that they are not asking candidates to advocate an opening bridge but rather asking them to oppose a fixed bridge, no matter whether the Department is willing to pay for an opening bridge or not. It's part of the groups No Boats No Votes campaign which has seen posters erected throughout the city.
A Newry 2020 spokesperson explains "In addition to asking candidates make their positions clear, we have also asked them to take a photo of themselves holding a sign saying "NO FIXED BRIDGE" and to say how they will oppose a fixed bridge. We have sent a similar request to local party leaders. We will update this page with responses and photos as we receive them."
The spokesperson concluded "If you would like to help our campaign, feel free to print out a copy of the NO FIXED BRIDGE sign and keep it handy for when candidates come knocking. Politely ask if you can take a photo of them holding up the sign... and let us know what kind of response you get!"
