The Alliance’s candidate for the Local Government Elections in Newry DEA has said she wants civic pride restored in the city and thinks that Newry, Mourne and Down District Council is prioritising other projects ahead of Newry's proposed public park which is the top priority for residents.
Helena Young said : “I have lived in Newry all of my life; my family grew up here and now my grandchildren will grow up here. I have been fortunate to have been involved with community and voluntary groups for many years and for the last six years I have been the Alliance Party representative in Newry.”
“Despite not being elected I have supported many people with a range of issues over the last number of years including road safety, housing issues, benefits and public services etc and I have achieved positive outcomes for many. A council seat will enable me to deliver even more on the issues that matter to local people.”
“Alliance has always campaigned for openness and transparency at all levels of government. Local government cannot work well unless it is open and transparent and as part of the Alliance council team I will continue to make this a priority."
Young continued "I have campaigned for the delivery of the Albert Basin Park for the last six years; Despite Alliance proposing the original motion in 2017 we have not had seat at the table, the people of Newry have made it clear that the provision of a 15-acre Park and its associated green spaces are a priority for our residents’ families and visitors. It seems that council is prioritising other projects ahead of the park, a council seat will ensure that there will be a champion ready to fight on behalf of our local Communities and families and I will work to see our city park delivered.”
“I want Newry to have the best public services, the best facilities and to be a place that we can all be proud of. Newry is a fantastic city and it has a wonderful sense of community, I really want to see some Civic pride restored in our city and I want to do my best to contribute to that, I will work with everyone for everyone. If elected I will be privileged to represent the people of Newry, to listen to the people of Newry and to work hard to deliver for the people of Newry.”
“There hasn't been an Alliance Councillor in Newry for nearly 50 years, I narrowly missed a seat by 41 votes in 2019, I really hope to make history on the 18th of May, every vote will count.
The Newry candidate concluded "If you are fed up with the same old politics, vote Young!”
