Write a commentSouth Armagh MLA Megan Fearon has expressed her concerns that farmers in the north will be among the biggest losers following England’s decision to leave the EU.
With the agriculture industry one of the most vital industries on the island the MLA points out that this didn't cross the minds of the Conservative party.
Commenting she said "When this referendum was called, and indeed throughout the campaign, the case of Irish farmers did not cross the mind of the British Tory party.
"In terms of the Common Agriculture Policy alone, farmers here stand to lose in the region of €34,000 a year, which would cripple their livelihoods.
"This is not to mention the impact restrictions on cross-border trading would have.
Expressing a lack of faith that the government will fight for farmers Ms Fearon added "The British government has no democratic mandate to represent the views of the people of the north and I have absolutely no faith that they will fight for interests of Irish farmers in their negotiations with the EU.
“Sinn Féin will continue to stand up for Irish farmers and fight their case in Europe, Leinster House, the Assembly and local government."
