Fisher Park was reopened at the weekend with new art installations, an anchor and street furniture added.
The renaissance of Fisher Park is evidence of a successful working partnership between the public and voluntary and sector. Newry & Mourne District Council and Newry Maritime Association is involved in ongoing dialogue regarding environmental projects concerning Newry Canal and association Built Heritage and this is one example of partnership working.
Speaking at the Launch, Mayor Mickey Ruane said "I am very pleased to be here today at the official opening of Fisher Park, which is part of the ongoing regeneration of the environs of Newry Canal."
"Just fifteen days ago I presided at another auspicious occasion, the opening ceremony of the Linenhall Gate following an extensive refurbishment. These regenerative events will be further galvanized by the second phase of the Public Realm Scheme which will be shortly rolled out between Dublin Bridge and Sugar Island."
"Today is an example of the excellent working relationship between my Council and the voluntary sector and everyone is to be commended for their efforts and enthusiasm."
Concluding he added "This area today is the nucleus of a vibrant commercial centre which is reflective of the once hive of activities connected with the Port and the Quays. This Park is named after a family who traded here through four generations from 1852. They and their workforce made a huge contribution to the economic development of the modern day Newry as we know it. Hopefully this refurbished Park stands as a testament to their effort and commitment to us all."
