During the summer, adults with disabilities have been participating in walking groups across the Southern Trust as part of the Fit 4 U Project.
As Autumn approaches, groups will be returning to local Leisure Centres across the Trust, to participate in a range of group based physical activities and sports.
Fit 4 U seeks to empower people with disabilities to improve their health through participation in a range of daytime physical activity and sporting opportunities.

Programmes take place in 5 Leisure Centres across the Trust, at Newry Leisure Centre, Dungannon Leisure Centre, Craigavon Leisure Centre, Banbridge Leisure Centre and Armagh Leisure Centre. There is a Fit 4 U programme for adults with physical disabilities and a Fit 4 U 2 programme for adults with learning disabilities at each Leisure Centre.
Participants enjoy a range of sports and physical activities, including group exercise, boxercise, boccia, kurling, ball skills, badminton, indoor golf and archery.
Rhonda Richardson, Fit 4 U Co-ordinator, explains “all activities and sports are adapted and tailored to meet the needs of people with disabilities and seek to be inclusive and accessible for all abilities. Participants experience physical, mental and social health benefits”
Fit 4 U is funded by the Public Health Agency and led by the Southern Health and Social Care Trust in partnership with other organisations, including the local Council authorities and Sport NI Everybody Active coaches.
