Buttercrane and The Quays Car parks also suffered but with weather easing at least temporarily it's hoped that conditions will improve slowly.

The Clanrye River was at it's highest level for quite some time and the Newry Canal Towpath disappeared under the water in many places.

Emergency services attended the scene at Bridge Street including several fire crews, while members of the PSNI helped bring sand bags to doors of the properties and carry people out. Many of the properties are residential and while some residents were carried out others choose to remain upstairs.

A police spokesperson has confirmed Bridge Street remains closed.
