With further rain forecast later tonight Cllr Dáire Hughes, Mayor of Newry and Mourne District Council has said that the Council have expressed concern about the rising levels of water in front of Newry Town Hall and they have requested the Rivers Agency to build up the wall on the side of the Cenotaph with sandbags.
"The Rivers Agency have plans to sandbag the wall at the Cenotaph because its lower. Newry and Mourne Council have asked them to consider building up the wall on that side as there are serious concerns about the rising water levels in front of Newry Town Hall" explained the Mayor who continued
"We have also asked that water sucked up from Bridge Street is tanked into the river not the canal. The next concern is high winds which may or may not cause a tidal surge, however normally winter tides are lower than spring tides".
The Mayor confirmed that Newry Sport Centre has been deemed a place of rescue, and evacuees will be catered for there if needed. He also stated that the Council vehicles and staff are involved in the ongoing sandbagging operations and that the Councils Emergency Team has met and will continue to review events over the next 24/48 hrs.
