The expected high tide coupled with the present stormy weather has put agencies and the PSNI on high alert for the next few hours.
The Clanrye river has already risen several metres above it's usual level and many local businesses are putting sand bags in place at their properties.
Newry and Mourne Council are handing out sand bags at several locations.
A statement released just now reads "Newry & Mourne District Council can now confirm that sandbags are available for collection by the public and businesses from Newry Sports Centre, Patrick Street Newry and Newry Museum / Bagenals Castle carpark, Castle Street, Newry. Stocks are extremely limited and only those in real need should collect them. There will be a maximum of 6 available per property."
The car park at the front of the Buttercrane Shopping Centre has been closed and sand bags are being placed at the side of the river.
The Council have a list of emergency helpline numbers on their website www.newryandmourne.gov.uk/Emergency_Numbers.aspx
