Fellow Priests, Parishioners and friends joined popular Priest Fr Michael Woods at a special Mass in St Joseph's Church, Poyntzpass at the weekend, to celebrate his milestone 40 years a priest. The Mass was followed by an event at Newry Golf Club. The celebrations were organised by parishioners to show their gratitude to Fr. Woods for walking alongside and supporting the families in the Parish over the years.
Based in the Parochial House in Poyntzpass Fr Woods has been Parish Priest in the Parish of Ballymore and Mullabrack since 2002. A County Louth native Fr Woods studied for the priesthood at St Patrick's Maynooth and was ordained on 10 July 1984. After his ordination Fr Woods was assigned to Drogheda Parish from 1984 to 1988 before taking up a post at Drumcree Parish until 2002.
Taking part in the Mass were Fr Padraig Murphy and Fr Desmond Corrigan who had been in Maynooth at the same time along with the late Fr Michael Rogers. The music was really special with pupils from St Joseph's and St James' Primary School, Poyntzpass joining with Parish Choir members, soloist Sarah van der Westhuizen and Orla Kennedy.
A special cake was made to mark the occasion and presentations included a beautiful stained glass feature depicting St Brigid of Faughart, the area where Fr Woods grew up.
