Drivers parking in Newry on St Patrick's Day will no longer face on-street parking charges after Infrastructure Minister Liz Kimmins confirmed a change in legislation bringing the national holiday into line with other non-charge periods.
The change applies to Controlled Parking Zones (CPZs) in Newry, Belfast and Lisburn and takes effect from now following the amendment to legislation by the Department for Infrastructure.
Minister Kimmins said: "There has previously been a difference between St Patrick's Day and other holiday periods when it comes to parking charges. My Department has been working to amend the legislation and I am pleased to confirm that from 2026 St Patrick's Day will be a non-charge day for on-street parking in Controlled Parking Zone areas in Belfast, Lisburn and Newry. This will provide greater flexibility for those wanting to either enjoy the festivities or simply to visit one of the cities to socialise or shop on their day off."
The Minister also urged visitors to park considerately during the holiday period. "I would also remind anyone visiting any of our towns and cities next week to continue to park legally and responsibly, and to think about the potential negative impact that inconsiderate parking can have on other people. If we all park responsibly we can ensure we have safer streets, better access for disabled people, support for local businesses and keep our transport system running smoothly," she added.
The change covers on-street parking within CPZs only. Parking in the majority of off-street car parks remains the responsibility of local councils. Further information on parking in controlled zones is available at street-parking and street-pay-and-display-tariffs-controlled-parking-zones
