A Newry dog has been named a finalist in this year's Nose of Tralee competition, with voting now open to the public at shortstack.page .
Ira, a five-year-old Cavachon is in the running thanks to her work as a volunteer pet therapy dog and her friendly nature.
Ira volunteers with the Southern Health & Social Care Trust, visiting children's hospital wards, rehabilitation homes for older adults and supported living services for teenagers with disabilities. During one visit, a young boy who would not usually engage positively reacted to Ira by reaching out to pet her, a moment which support workers said showed just how powerful the bond between people and animals can be.
As well as her volunteering work, Ira has notched up some travel of her own, having spent six months living in Vancouver, Canada, where she charmed everyone she met. Her owner, Inis Fitzpatrick, said the trip to Canada was one of many adventures for the Cavachon.
Speaking about Ira's place in the final, Fitzpatrick said: "I'm absolutely delighted that Ira is a finalist, although I always knew she would do well because she really is such an amazing little dog. She has a very special personality and seems to make an impression wherever she goes. She volunteers with the Southern Health & Social Care Trust, bringing so much joy to the people she meets, and she's even travelled all the way to Vancouver, Canada with me. She's had more adventures than most dogs! I'm incredibly proud that she now gets to represent County Down in the Nose of Tralee".
Voting in the Nose of Tralee competition closes on 17 August 2026, with members of the public able to cast a vote once every 24 hours.
