Twelve consultants are now in place at Daisy Hill Hospital according to Health Minister Robin Swann who was replying to a question from Newry and Armagh MLA William Irwin about his plans for the future provision of services at the Hospital. Minister Swann's comments follow a period at Daisy Hill in 2023 where it was difficult to retain consultants while also at the time emergency general surgery provision moved to Craigavon Hospital.
In his reply on 15 April Minister Swann said, "I wish to clearly state at the outset that Daisy Hill Hospital provides a vital service to the local population and is an important part of NI’s current and future hospital network. Changes over recent months include: 12 consultants now in place and supporting a new medical model with support from senior consultants and a full complement of junior doctors.
"Improvements in patient flow with private ambulance provision doubled, control room enhancement, a discharge lounge in place, an 8-Bed Short Stay Unit has also been developed as well as an enhanced Ambulatory Unit."
The minister also spoke about other key developments on the Daisy Hill site including an MRI modular unit and the continued development of the regional Elective Overnight Stay Centre ( FOSC)."
The Minister concluded,"My Department and the Trust remains committed to the future development of Daisy Hill Hospital site as an integral part of the hospital network and to ensure safe services for the Newry population."
