Write a commentMs Heather Johnston, Kilkeel won the title of Recycler of the Month for April. The competition, run by Newry and Mourne District Council, awards £50 to householders who use their recycling bins correctly.
Heather has a blue and brown bin and takes great pride in using them both to their full recycling potential. Her blue bin contained all the correct recyclable material including glass, newspapers and aerosols. Heather said that when her blue and brown bins are full she visits Kilkeel Household Recycling Centre to recycle as much of her waste as possible.
The Recycling Officer checked 20 bins at random in the Kilmorey Court and main Newcastle road area of Kilkeel and noted that for the most part residents recycled all the correct materials. However some bins contained incorrect material which was removed to ensure bins were collected. Materials such as tissue, polystyrene plastic wrap (crisp bags, plastic wrap on food packaging) and plastic bags cannot be recycled in the blue bin and should be placed into the black bin.
The following materials can go into your blue recycling bin:
Paper and cardboard (including newspapers and directories)
Plastic bottles
Plastic packaging (e.g. yogurt pots and margarine tubs)
Glass bottles and jars
Aerosols
Tins and cans (e.g. drinks cans and sweet/biscuit tins)
Tetra Pak (waxed cartons)
Tin foil (must not contain any food residue)
