Home safety packs delivered to residents

Newry, Mourne and Down Policing and Community Safety Partnership (PCSP) recently ensured over 2500 Home Safety packs were distributed to vulnerable residents throughout the district.

The Home Safety packs are designed for elderly people living alone, vulnerable members of the community, previous victims of a home burglary and residents who live in an area identified as high risk for home burglaries.

Chairman of Newry, Mourne and Down PCSP, Cllr John Trainor said “The aim of distributing the Home Safety packs was to help improve home safety during the winter months and reduce fear of crime in our local communities, especially in the weeks leading up to Christmas. The Packs contain a range of key items which can combat burglary, act as a crime prevention mechanism and also help reduce fear of crime. All of those who received a Home Safety pack will now be better equipped to protect themselves and their property.

Due to COVID-19 restrictions, Newry, Mourne and Down PCSP was unable to hold its own events to distribute the Packs as it has done in the past, so I am very thankful to our partner agencies who helped identify vulnerable people in the district and distributed the Home Safety packs to them.”

Cllr Trainor added, “The benefits of the distribution network has also familiarised communities more with Neighbourhood Watch Co-Ordinators in their area, and this has also helped the Co-Ordinators feel supported, confident and equipped to support the vulnerable within their Neighbourhood Watch area.

Fear of crime and isolation remains prevalent within many of our communities and Newry, Mourne and Down PCSP understand that it is still necessary to address these issues. Newry, Mourne and Down PCSP is committed to making our district safer and the recent distribution of all the Home Safety packs is a way to support one of the PCSP’s key themes, which is to; support our communities to protect themselves and their property in order to reduce their fear of crime.”
